Tom a Jerry je americký animovaný seriál se 161 díly, který v roce 1940 pro společnost MGM vytvořili William Hanna a Joseph Barbera. Je zaměřena na dvě postavy - kocoura Toma a myšáka Jerryho. V seriálu se také objevuje spousta vedlejších postav, z nichž nejznámější jsou Tomova panička(silnější afroameričanka) a pes Spike. Tom a Jerry mezi sebou svádějí věčný boj, ve kterém se Tom snaží chytit Jerryho. Ten ho však vždy přelstí a ukáže mu, že se jen tak chytit nenechá. Jerry také Toma rád provokuje, dělá mu naschvály a připravuje na něj všelijaké zákeřné pastičky.

Další postavy[editovat | editovat zdroj]

V mnoha dílech se kromě titulních hrdinů objevují ještě další postavy, například šedý myšák Tuffy, kačátko, kachňátko, černý kocour Butch (vyslovuje se [bač]), či dva buldoci – Spike a Tyke (někdy překládáno česky jako Bulda a Bulínek). Hodně se zde objevuje i jejich majitel.

V prvním díle Jak kočka dostala padáka, který vznikl 10. září 1940, se ještě kocour a myšák jmenovali Jasper a Jynx. Studio řeklo, že "kočkomyších" seriálů už bylo dost a natáčení chtělo zrušit. Svůj názor ale změnilo, jakmile byl seriál nominován na Oscara. Nominaci sice v sošku neproměnil, ale umožnilo to další natáčení seriálu. William Hanna a Joseph Barbera uznali za vhodné do dalšího dílu změnu jmen hlavních protagonistů a tak vyhlásili soutěž o nové jméno, kterou vyhrál John Carr a jeho odměnou bylo 50 dolarů. Za celou dobu natáčení původní série bylo nakonec na Oscara nominováno 13 epizod a 7 jich proměnilo ve zlatou sošku.


Roku 1957 se společnost MGM rozhodla uzavřít animační studio a tak se výroba seriálu přesunula do Rembrandt Films, které se nacházelo v Praze. Na seriálu se podíleli čeští kreslíři ze studia Bratři v triku. Celkem natočili 13 epizod, které však byly kvůli horší kvalitě animace a zvukových efektů hodnoceny jako méně povedené. Jakmile smlouva s Rembrandt Films skončila, výroba seriálu se přesunula opět do zámoří.


Vzniklo(a stále vzniká) spousta celovečerních filmů, z nichž první vyšel v roce 1991 pod jménem "Tom a Jerry"


Některým filmovým kritikům se nelíbily scény, ve kterých jde doslova o život. Častokrát se o tom s tvůrci přeli. Fiktivní pořad Itchy & Scratchy Show, který se objevuje v mnoha dílech seriálu Simpsonovi, paroduje zejména takovéto surové scény. A asi kolem 20. let byl seriál pro děti také s názvem Tom a Jerry, ale byli to 2 lidé, kteří si pomáhali. Viz odkaz na video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0HsS1Sr6Vw
