The region, in which the photoexpedition was taken

Wikiexpedice Mladá Vožice was a multi-day group photo session that took place on Easter 2019 and several other repetitions in the region of Mladá Vožice, Czech Republic. Below is a detailed final report on the event, which was intended to illustrate articles especially on Czech Wikipedia.

Basic information[editovat | editovat zdroj]

  • Location: Mladá Vožice region or 35 km from village Mezno
  • Dates: April 18-21, 2019 (Easter), 18.–21. dubna 2019 (Velikonoce), additional photo sessions May 25-26, June 3-5 and July 18
  • Organizer: Juandev
  • Financial support: Wikimedia Foundation
  • Participants: 7 (Aktron, Jklamo, Juandev, KKDAII, T.Bednarz (Easter); Art Jarka, Jerryfoto, Juandev, T.Bednarz (other days))

Goals and results[editovat | editovat zdroj]

The aim of Wikiexpedition Mladá Vožice was to photographically document this region, which in particular was escaping to Prague photographers. Participants of the WikiProject Photography, or the project Czech Municipalities Photograph (CMP) respectively, have long been able to penetrate in other directions beyond the 100-kilometer border (62 miles), but the nearby southeastern neighborhood of Prague was still insufficiently documented. That is why the wikiexpedition participants decided already in 2018 that another wikiexpedition will take place in this region.

User Aktron manually scanned articles of all settlements and picked the ones not taken. Subsequently, he prepared detailed background maps. Juandev then secured a grant, Art Jarka accommodation, Jklamo provided his car, and we were ready to go. Three and a half days, two wikifotographer teams traveled around the region, taking pictures mainly for Wikipedia village articles. We did not forget to take pictures of cultural monuments and other points of interest for Wikidata. When a partial evaluation was carried out after Easter, it was found that we are still missing many villages. Thats why we came another three times to fulfill our goal.

Here it is necessary to point out that the village that is not photographed (based on CMP rules) is considered to have no photo or one that has a photo but are in very poor technical condition or do not document the area very well. The low informative value was the reason why many villages were included in the expedition even though there were some photos. Many villages in the region had only photographs of crosses and other small sacral buildings.

In total, over 5,900 photographs were taken during the expedition to illustrate articles on Czech Wikipedia (277) and Wikidata (262). Number 635 in the table below shows the total number of articles across all language mutations that have been illustrated. The percentage of photos used in Wikipedia is around 30 % and can no longer be increased, mainly due to the length of articles, which are often in the form of stubs. However, we consider it good to have more documentary photographs than we can use – they may be used in the future.

In addition to being used in Wikipedia and Wikidata, photos are gradually getting into other projects, such as Wikiversity, Wiktionary or Wikimedia Commons itself. This year the total cost of the photo was EUR 0.15 (USD 0,16), which is a parameter we have been monitoring for a long time. Mediagrant, which has been running for ten years, has an average photo price of up to EUR 0,19 (USD 0,21). Participants of wikiexpedition are not paid for their work, they only receive a reimbursement to transport, accommodation and meals.

All photos from the expedition can be found on Commons in the category Wikiexpedice Mladá Vožice. In contrast to what we have done in previous years, this year we mainly include details and sort photographs by topic. Long-term photography of the Czech Republic, which the Czech community has been doing for 10 years, contributes to capture the face of the countryside in a certain period and will be especially valuable in the future.

Village chapels, bell towers and crosses[editovat | editovat zdroj]

The most grateful object of photographers is the chapel and the church, which are also often placed in the infobox as the cover photo. However, we do not forget to take pictures of crosses, bell towers and other small sacral objects, these can be also used to illustrate lists of the cultural monuments by the district.

Bus stop shelters[editovat | editovat zdroj]

On expeditions we do not focus only on cultural monuments and shots of the whole village, but we are also interested in civic amenities, in this case transport. Sometimes a detail of a bus stop shelter is taken, sometimes a larger context is photographed and the shelter can be cut out of the photograph.

Separate waste containers[editovat | editovat zdroj]

Another example of wikiexpedition has a broadly documentary scope. Separate waste containers are attractive objects of photographers due to their color scheme. Wikipedia does not find its application, at most in the article on waste sorting in the Czech Republic.

Animals and plants[editovat | editovat zdroj]

We do not forget about life in the village. But there are few people in the Czech countryside and we will never be lucky. Moreover, taking pictures of people is a little more complicated, it takes more time for it and also the official permission, etc. Sometimes we are lucky enough to capture at least other inhabitants of the country than people.

On organizational matters[editovat | editovat zdroj]

As a general rule, the most challenging thing for the organizer is that they have to process the documents and photos. It takes tens of hours of time to manually filter data and search for unphotographed locations. The same is tens of hours of time as well as identifying photos, describing and embedding in Wikimedia projects. This must be done by the participants. Some have already learned ways to work quickly in a matter of days, while others are still worried about it, and sometimes they don't even have time to upload all the photos. Although we have rapid processing procedures, some of the participants are not able to pass these procedures. This is one of the reasons why we must always say goodbye to those who have not uploaded their photos. The fact that somebody doesn't upload their photographs is usually not a problem for the expedition itself. Teams consist of two to three people, so there are always photos from every place. But it is a pity to lose volunteers. It is a matter of discussion. You need to figure out how to do it to avoid it. Therefore, we are planning minor changes to our wikiexpedition. In addition, we are preparing new software that should simplify and speed up photo processing.

Other benefits of the Wikiexpedition[editovat | editovat zdroj]

  • Wikipedia
    • from all available photos we choose the best
    • we add links to categories on Commons
    • we add photos to articles other than of villages
    • we add photos to other language mutations, especially to English
  • Wikimedia Commons
    • we create all new categories and complete the categorization tree
    • we insert links to Wikipedia
    • we have started adding structured data
    • we add missing data (coordinates, data) even after the expedition
  • Wikidata
    • we insert photos (villages, streets) and links to Commons
    • sometimes we refine the photographs
    • we create new items
    • we have prepared a database query that can be used to prepare further expeditions
  • Other

Future wikiexpeditions[editovat | editovat zdroj]

Before we were able to process the photographs from this expedition, another expedition took place, namely in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, which is still in progress at the time of this final report, and so far the results are not known. As the concept of wikiexpedition is popular, we are already preparing the wikiexpedition for 2020, which this time could take place in the German-Polish border and could concentrate in addition to photos of villages and rural areas and photos of railway stations and infrastructure.

So if you are a wikifotographer and would like to participate, please feel free to contact Juandev via discussion page or email. We will be grateful for anyone who could rent their car for the event or who specializes in taking pictures of people.
