Science and Technology Week of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic

An experiment conducted for the public in a laboratory in 2012, Institute of Geophysics of the ASCR Science and Technology Week of the Academy of Sciences of the CR is a popularisation event organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, which considering its size and number of visitors is the largest science festival in the Czech Republic. It takes place annual at the beginning of November, lasts for 15 days and in 2013 was already the 13th annual event. The festival is intended for the wider public, but primarily secondary school students, who are allowed to look into its diverse scientific workplaces or laboratories of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and find out more about the world of science. History of the festival

The first year of the festival took place in 2001 and began with only a few lectures and presentations. Since then, Science and Technology Week has become a true science festival thanks to the great interest of students and the public. The festival is organized by the Academy of Sciences of the CR and is participated in by all of its workplaces and numerous of its partner organizations. Each year, the organizers select a topic in whose spirit the entire festival then shares. The topics of past years include: The Global Year of Physics (2005), Biotechnology (2006), The Fascination with Light (2007), The International Year of Planet Earth (2008), What is Our World Like (2009), The Diversity of the World and Life in It (2010), Science for Life (2011), The Energy of Science (2012).

Programme

Every year, Science and Technology Week offers a diverse programmes of open houses, lectures, science cafés, seminars, exhibitions or the screening of scientific shows, namely all over the Czech Republic. In 2012, it took place in all of the regional towns of the Czech Republic and was attended by a record 94,245 visitors.

Lectures

The lectures last about an hour and most of them are accompanied by a visual presentation. At the end, there is always the opportunity for questions, or a discussion.

For clarity, the lectures are divided by topic: • Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Environment • Digital technology • World of Science • Medicine • Sociology • Literature • History • Mathematics

A number of the festival’s lectures are presented online and their recordings are available in the video archives on the event’s website.

Open Houses of the Workplaces of the Academy of Sciences of the CR

In 2012, open Houses that are popular with the public took place at 50 institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the CR and at many other partner organizations. During the tours of the scientific-research workplaces, the visitors themselves can try some laboratory equipment of take part in various experiments, guided excursions of historic buildings, author’s readings, film screenings, accompanying lectures, presentations and exhibitions. An inseparable part is the opportunity for discussion. Within Science and Technology Week, inter alia also the information centre and selected power stations of the ČEZ Group are open to the public, which offers an illustrative view of the various types of energy producing resources.

Exhibitions

The most graphic parts of the programme of Science and Technology Week of the Academy of Sciences of the CR are the exhibitions, which focus on making science more accessible from various perspectives. Visitors can see the exhibitions both with the Open Houses of the workplaces of the ASCR and separately in various towns of the Czech Republic.

Films

The festival also offers exceptionally graphic and very engagingly and accessibly filmed documentary films, which provide a fascinating image of the latest possibilities of the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences.

Science Cafés

Science cafés usually have the format of informal lectures with more space for audience discussion. They are mainly lectures in the early evening organized in literary cafés.
