I have corrected the weight of this probe. The launching conditions were inferior to those of Mars 2 & 3. Mars orbit is more elliptical than Earth, so distance between the planets varies over the years. The closer the planets, the more weight the rocket can carry. As a result, the rocket could only carry a lighter spacecraft during this launch window. Therefore, the Russians designed two different types of spacecraft. Two carried fuel with no lander, to fly into orbit around Mars. The other two were equipped with a lander, but no fuel. They undocked their lander and flew further into space.
