Historie

Die Hauptfarben Schwarz und Gold spielen auf die altwürttembergischen Wappenfarben an. Der Auerhahn, ein einmaliges Motiv in der Heraldik der Landkreise, bezieht sich auf den Schwarzwald und insbesondere auf die einstigen fürstlichen Jagdreviere im Gebiet des Kreises.

Am 3. September 1973 hat das Innenministerium Baden-Württemberg dem Landkreis Freudenstadt das Recht verliehen, ein Kreiswappen zu führen.
