Entrance view to the second and largest cave, the Temple of the Great King (or alternatively, Cave of the Great Kings), showing how even the ceilings of the caves are painted along with the vast array of statues on display. The Royal Rock Temple complex began in the 1st century BCE when King Valagamba was driven out of the capital of Anuradhapura and took refuge in the caves here which were the site of an important monastery. After regaining his throne, he had some of the cave interiors carved into rock temples. Subsequent centuries saw kings add more paintings and statues (Buddhas, Hindu gods, and the kings themselves) as well as expand the complex into new caves. King Nissanka Malla who ruled from1187 to 1196 had the interiors gilded. The Golden Temple of Dambulla became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
