Francis Percival Wenman (May 6th 1891, Croydon — March 19th 1972, Cardiff) was a chess player, chess composer, and chess writer. In 1920, he has won in the championship of Scotland.
Wenman was a studious author of chess books, he has published sevaral works on various chess topics: collections of commented games, selections of end games, and also several collections of chess problems.
Many contemporary chess professionals have proven[1] that many of the Wenman's problems are plagiarisms:
Transformation of problem of a German composer was created by rotating the board by 90° and is an indisputable crib.
Another transformation created by rotating by 180°.
Mechanical rotation of position by 90° removes the line 1. dxc5? Nd7 from the original author's solution, due to absence of d4 pawn.
Another transformation created by rotating by 180°.
Wenman could not directly transform a large number of problems due to the presence of pawn. Therefore, he has adapted them and presented as his originals.
Other problems containing pawns were moved by a column.
La Strategie, 1907
Although Wenman was present in the chess world since the twenties of the 20th century and his bibliography includes tens of publications in many editions, no author was found to write his obituary after his death in 1972. Authoritative Oxford Companion to Chess containing more than 2,500 entries dedicates a large portion of entry Plagiarism to Wenman.
