35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Dasyuromorpha; Family: Dasyuridae; Genus: Dasyurus; Genus species: Dasyurus maculatus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 350-759 mm; Weight: 4-7 kg; Identification: The tiger cat is dimorphic, which means it occurs in two distinct forms. It is a rich brown color with white spots on the top, paler underparts, and a spotted tail; Habitat: Rainforests, open forests, woodlands, coastal and inland areas; Diet: Omnivore: birds, small animals, carrion, insects and plants; Reproduction: Mating season occurs from April and July. Gestation lasts 21 days. Females average five young per litter. Both parents help to defend their nest. The male may bring food to the female while she nurses the young; Social Structure: Tiger cats are solitary animals; Behavior: The tiger cat is nocturnal and partly arboreal; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: In certain areas of Australia, tiger cat numbers are dwindling due to habitat destruction, trapping, and introduced predators (domestic cats, foxes, etc.). |
