English: Cantata performed by the young ladies of the four “ospedali” (hospitals) during the incognito visit to Venice between 18 and 25 January 1782 of the heirs to the throne of Russia: the Grand Duke Paul Petrovitz, son of Peter III and Catherine II, later Tsar under the name Paul I, and his wife. Three nights in a row, performances were given in their honor at the “Casino of the Philharmonia” shown on the canvas. The four musical hospitals were founded in Venice by religious or civil orders in the 16th and 17th century, during a period of famine, to bring in foundlings from the streets, orphans, and sick [children]. These establishments existed thanks to public charity; the children learned a trade to allow them to enter into society. Music teachers were present in each hospital but music lessons were limited to girls. Between 1650 and 1750, music occupied an ever-expanding place. The “chorus” of an establishment could include 100 young girls and instrumentalists.
Français : Cantate exécutée par les jeunes filles des quatre "ospedali" lors de la visite incognito à Venise du 18 au 25 janvier 1782 des héritiers du trône de Russie : le grand duc Paolo Petrowitz, fils de Pierre III et de Catherine II, puis tsar sous le nom de Paul Ier, et son épouse. Trois soirs de suite, des spectacles ont été donnés en leur honneur au "Casino dei Filarmonici" représenté sur la toile. Quatre hospices musiciens ont été fondés à Venise par des religieux ou des civils aux XVIe et XVIIe siècle, en période de famine, pour recueillir les enfants trouvés dans les rues, orphelins ou malades. Ces établissements subsistaient grâce à la charité publique, les enfants y apprenaient un métier pour leur permettre de s'insérer dans la société. Des maîtres de musique étaient présents dans chaque hospice mais les leçons de musique y étaient réservées aux filles. Entre 1650 et 1750, la musique y occupe une place grandissante. Le "chœur" d'un établissement pourra compter jusqu'à 100 jeunes filles, chanteuses et instrumentistes.
