English: A U.S. Navy Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat of fighting squadron VF-3 from the USS Yorktown (CV-5) lands on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-8), circa 15:30 h, 4 June 1942. The plane "3-F-5" was piloted by Ens. H. A. Bass, USNR, who had forgotten to close the firing circuit switch, and had inadvertently pressed the firing key when the
plane stopped suddenly. The six 12.7 mm machine guns opened fire, but the bullets passed harmlessly over the deck. |
