English: Australian soldiers marching along a dusty tree-lined road in France. They are all wearing soft hats and are fully armed and equipped. Most of the men have noticed the photographer and are looking at the camera and smiling. One man stretches his hand towards the camera in acknowledgement. For men who are making their way 'to the firing line' they all look remarkably happy. This is a good example of the type of photograph that was often used as propaganda by the Government and Military. Images of happy, smiling soldiers were a comfort to those at home and also helped to boost morale amongst the troops. The realities of war were often well hidden and virtually non-existent in the heavily censored official photographs of the time. |
