English: This picture was taken in Possession Island (Crozet Archipelago) at the site named "the elephant seal pool". This picture was taken in december 2002 by Nicolas Servera. On the top of the picture, just near the shore, you can see a male of the subantarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) keeping a close eye on his females. The edges of the picture match to the borders of his territory. His harem includes the eight females present on his territory and maybe other females not present at the moment of the picture. There is three pups on the picture. Two pups are marked with a numbered tape glued on the fur at the top of the head. This marking is made by scientifics in order to indentify the pups. On the bottom left corner, one pup is resting very close to his mother. The two other pups are too distant from a female. These pups are probably alone, waiting the return of their mothers from a sea trip. All the females resting on the beach without a pup on their side are most probably pregnant, waiting the parturition. On the upside left corner, there is one (maybe two) female who isn't from this harem but belongs to another. Furthermore, you can see a penguin trying to reach the sea. This penguin is probaly a rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) maybe a small macaroni penguin (Eudyptes chrysolophus).

En haut de la photographie juste au bord du rivage, vous pouvez voir un mâle otarie subantarctique (Arctocephalus tropicalis) qui surveille les femelles présentes sur son territoire. Les bords de la photo correspondent aux frontières du territoire de ce mâle. Le harem de ce mâle comprend les huit femelles présentes sur ce territoire mais également, peut-être, d'autres femelles non présentes au moment de la prise de vue. Vous pouvez voir également trois petits otaries sur cette photo. Deux d'entre eux sont marqués avec des bouts de ruban numérotés et collés sur la fourrure en haut de la tête. Ce marquage est réalisé par des scientifiques dans le but d'identifier les différents animaux. Dans le coin en bas à gauche de la photo, vous pouvez voir un petit qui se repose très près de sa mère. Les deux autres petits sont relativement distants des femelles présentes, ils sont probablement seuls. Ils attendent probablement le retour de leur mères qui se nourrissent en mer. Toutes les femelles qui se reposent sur la plage sans petit à côté d'elles sont probablement enceintes, elles attendent la parturition. Dans le coin gauche en haut, vous pouvez voir une autre femelle (peut-être deux) qui appartient à un autre harem. Enfin, vous pouvez voir un petit manchot qui traverse la plage pour rejoindre l'océan. Il s'agit probablement d'un gorfou sauteur (Eudyptes chrysocome) ou, peut-être d'un gorfou macaroni (Eudyptes chrysolophus ) de petite taille. |
