It is very nice that you're interested in south-east of Europe, but I must inform you in some actual facts about Balcan that you didn't knew.

ABOUT BALKAN

Balcan isn't some homogenous territory as it seems to someone. It has very diversed culture from one part to the another.

Also must inform you that Croatia IS NOT ON BALCAN ( you must differentiate political term "West Balcan" which is the new and artificial term, Balcan in it's original meaninig, and Balcan in cultural sense).

Croatia was for 400 years part of Habsbourg empire and other western powers, and by that in direct influence of western culture in all parts of it's life. But it was part of the west in the cultural and political sense even before that, since it's whole tradition is linked on western heritage ( for instance Croats were first Slavic tribe that adopted christianity, also Croatia was first European country with renaissance style after Italy, which you can easily check if you visit croatian region of Dalmatia with it's remarkable towns). On another hand, everyone who visit continental towns in Croatia ( Zagreb, Osijek, Slavonski Brod, Varaždin, Vukovar, Vinkovci,Požega, Bjelovar, Karlovac, Sisak etc.) quickly will notice there's strong central european caracter by it's architecture, culture, tradition, habits, etc.

You will not find that kind of caracteristics in SiCG, Albania or other real Balkan countries, which have strong oriental caracter ( from architecture, culture, traditions...), but you should first visit that areas, and make comparation. Then you'll see how absurd is statement that Croatia is part of Balkan ( but it's interesting that you didn't find also Slovenia as a part of "Balkan", since in a cultural and geografical sense it's similar as continental Croatia )

But if you apply same criteria on which country is on Balcan, then you must find even Hungary as a part of that "Balkan", because it is also neighbour with real Balcan countries ( Romania and SiCG), specially because of it's long historic ties with, for instance Serbia ( Belgrade and northern part of SiCG- Vojvodina, were owned by Hungary), and Romania.

In schism of christianity in the AD 1054. Croats stayed on the western side as a catholics,in which they differed from all it's ortodox neighbours. That situation is same today, as Croats are only catholics on whole "Balkan". That is very important hence religious division is also national one on the south-east Europe. That means that, for example, majority of Serbs (which are religious) are followers of ortodox church, while almost all Croats are catholics.

True territorial border between Balcan and west is in fact on river of Drina ( eastern border of Bosnia and Herzegovina with SiCG), which is old, well known split between East and West Roman Empire ( established in AD 395.).

I strongly sugest you to visit Croatia ( if you didn't yet) to see all of that as I have mentioned is absolutely true. Croatia is considered as a "Balkan" by some western politicians that have never visited it in their whole life. If they visited Cro. they wouldn't be doing such absurd thing like comparison of Croatia with Serbia or Albania is.

Lokkido
